Several counties in Siouxland are now subject to a winter storm warning for Friday
Thursday
remained mild here in Siouxland with temperatures exceeding average in the 40's
and 50's across the region.
The winds
remained light this afternoon as we keep the skies clear and welcome more sun
to the area.
Looking
towards tonight we will be increasing our cloud cover as temperatures drop into
the 20's to our overnight lows. Light snow will begin to enter Siouxland in our
western counties late overnight through Friday morning. Several counties in
Siouxland have been placed on a winter storm warning that will come into effect
late this evening and early tomorrow morning, and will continue until midnight
on Saturday. Other parts of Siouxland are still subject to a winter storm watch
and a winter weather advisory. The winter storm warning for Holt County,
Nebraska, goes into effect from midnight tonight and continues until 6 p.m.
Friday. Parts of northwestern Iowa, northeastern Nebraska and southeastern
South Dakota will be subject to a winter storm warning starting at 6 a.m.
Friday and until 12 p.m. Several other counties in our viewing area are still
subject to a winter storm watch and winter weather advisory. Snowfall between 4
and 10 inches is expected over most of the area throughout the day on Friday.
Travel could become difficult tomorrow, especially in the afternoon, as the
winds are expected to pick up between 15 and 30 miles per hour.
Widespread
snowfall becomes possible in the observation area early in the morning on
Friday. Snow appears to persist for most of the day, with the heaviest amounts
possible in northern Siouxland. Highs will be in the low 30s and winds will
remain minimal to start the day, but are expected to increase in the afternoon
to between 5 and 15 miles per hour.
Snowfall
amounts expected on Friday leave northern Siouxland with the best chance of
seeing the most snow accumulating with between 4 and 9 inches possible at this
time, with areas potentially exceeding those amounts. Central Siouxland,
including Sioux City, has between 3 and 7 inches of potential snowfall this
morning, and some of our southern counties are looking to get between 1 and 4
inches of potential snowfall by late Friday in the night.
The snow
seemed to be coming out of our coverage area late Friday night, leaving us
clear skies before the weekend.
